With our Analytical Writer Badge, students will develop a strong personal Writing Statement that they will utilize for the college application process. Youth will develop skills in Self-Awareness, Social-Awareness, Story-Telling, and Creativity. Self-Awareness is defined as understanding the impact their beliefs, emotions, and culture have had on their adolescent life, which will allow them to know themselves and share who they are with others. Social-Awareness is defined as learning how to be understanding and empathetic towards others and will think critically on current issues affecting those around them, and themselves. Story-Telling which is defined as an understanding of the Hero’s Journey which encourages a deeper understanding of the different life stages of our students and how impactful each one was to their growth and development. Creativity is defined as an increase in their knowledge of the English writing structure and ability to construct a strong and easy to understand personal writing statement that brings in different ideas and brings their passion to life.

Criteria

1. [required] Students will use the Hero’s Journey methodology to structure their writing into three sections, Past, Present, and Future (Reflect on past and present experiences)
2. [required] Students will analyze their Past to demonstrate the “Why” pursuing higher education.
3. [required] Students will analyze their Present to demonstrate the “How” in working towards the journey of pursuing a higher education.
4. [required] Students will analyze their Future to demonstrate the “Impact” pursuing a higher education will have on their community, family, and self.
5. [required] Students will incorporate all three sections, and develop a creative and reflective personal statement that focuses on experiences and background.
