We teach girls how to do more than fly drones and become Drone Pilots! Black Girls Drone Inc. teaches girls in early higher education to become FAA Certified Drone Pilots. We get them tech-ready becoming Drone literate for careers in Aviation, Aerospace, and Engineering. The National Center for Education Statistics reported that approximately 18% of black first-year students indicated that they wanted to pursue a STEM degree; 20% of white students stated the same. The problem comes later, as 40% of African American students end up changing their specialties, and 26% drop out of school. The reasons range from financial issues to poor preparation by the high schools that left them feeling intellectually inferior or disadvantaged. https://observatory.tec.mx/edu-news/minority-stem-representation-is-disappearing Meteorologists, climate scientists, and astronomers are also affected. Only 2.1% of the 13,000 members of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) are African-American. The lack of representation and obstacles to equal opportunity that racial and ethnic minorities and women perceive and experience in STEM careers pose a significant problem in our national quest for social and racial justice — and for our economic strength.
