Dancing Into the Past Project
Intergenerational programs challenge existing cultural narratives on aging and the older adult population through cross-generational collaboration. The Dancing Into the Past (DITP) project supports the Bishop Arts Theatre Centers’ mission to create opportunities for emerging artists. In this project, students from Booker T. Washington Performing and Visual Arts Center will collaborate with older adult participants that are a part of our existing creative aging program, PatioLive! This collaboration will allow the participants to co-create the (DITP) project and provide experiential education through service-learning, which will address human and community needs. The project will bring together two groups of people who likely would not interact otherwise. The goal is to give a voice to the voiceless, bridge the gap between the generations, and to contribute community art that will be appreciated in the future. The areas of focus are social, psychological/emotional, and intellectual/cognitive for both the older adults and the youth. The students will also improve their interviewing and storytelling skills.
